| Q: | I was wondering if you could share any tips on dressing appropriately for the cooler weather when running outside. I have some good pants and a good coat, but as fair as gloves, hat, scarf I'm not sure how to use these things when running. But I think I need them or something as it's getting pretty icky some days. I'd like to keep running outside as long as possible! | |

First things first, you do not want to overdress. You want to dress warmly before you leave your house, but not too many layers where you start sweating a lot. You will want to make sure that extremities that are most susceptible to cold weather like your hands, nose, and ears are well protected.
While you will want to have your hat and gloves on from the start, be prepared to take them off during your run if you get too hot and you are running with the wind to your back. Consider investing in lightweight clothing that is made out of polypropylene, something that will help to wick away moisture from your body, without making you feel like you weigh 500 pounds. Your legs will not need as much protection as your upper torso, so wear whatever feels comfortable and allow for flexibility in your stride. Finally, always consider how you feel when exercising in cool weather, as your breathing will become more difficult. Do not push it past your limits, and if weather is really bad, you are better off jumping on that treadmill. |
